The desire to have beautiful, smooth, and shiny hair is a dream of many women. Today, many methods can make hair smooth and manageable at any time of the year. One of the most popular methods is keratin hair straightening. Keratin also creates a protective layer on the hair from external influences, prevents dryness, brittleness, and the appearance of split ends, as well as gives the hair a perfectly smooth and straight condition. However, masters should be aware of who should never under any circumstances not to carry out this procedure.

Who shouldn’t undergo keratin treatment?

  • Pregnancy and lactation – although many formulations state that the procedure can be performed, it’s recommended to abstain. For such clients, you should exclusively use formulations without formaldehyde and cold modification complexes;
  • Scalp skin conditions – ulcers or wounds. Under no circumstances should the procedure be carried out on such clients, as it can severely damage the skin and worsen the situation;
  • Hair loss – if the client experiences severe hair loss due to a condition or the cause is undetermined, it’s also recommended to refrain from keratin straightening procedure;
  • Allergic reaction – since some keratin formulations contain components that release aldehydes during heating, it’s better for allergic individuals to avoid the procedure. This also applies to clients with acute respiratory conditions.

How does keratin treatment affect colored hair?

If the client plans to undergo bleaching or coloring that requires lightening the entire hair coverage, it is recommended to do this prior to keratin straightening. After that, you can proceed with the procedure immediately without waiting for 2 weeks, even on the same day. In the case of lightening, the sequence is as follows: lightening – keratin straightening – toning. However, if the procedure has already been performed, further lightening is recommended to be postponed for at least 5 weeks to allow the polymer film to set and the lightening agents to penetrate the hair. We recommend strictly adhering to these recommendations to prevent the client’s hair from being damaged and losing color after coloring and lightening.

If the client plans not for lightening but for simple coloring with up to 6% oxidant or toning, it is better to do this immediately after the procedure, possibly even on the same day. In case coloring has been recently done and the client is planning the procedure, it is important to warn them that keratin straightening may slightly wash out the color. Therefore, it is recommended to perform such types of coloring after the procedure.
